6-25-08 Waukesha County Technical College has donated a K.I.C.K. to the Waukesha Community Dental Clinic. Thanks so much to both organizations for letting us be a part of the new clinic. Enjoy the K.I.C.K.!
6-1-08 Congrats to Dave Mikesell! Our marketing intern has gone on to bigger and better things as an assistant GM for the new hockey team, The Pittsburgh Iron. We are going to miss him, but we are happy that he is doing what he loves!
5-27-08 The Child Life Council Conference was a great time. We made lot's of new friends, and we learned a lot about the Child Life profession first hand. It was amazing to finally meet the people we are trying to work with to improve the lives of kids. Thanks very much to the organizers to working with us, and for helping us make contacts.
5-15-08 K.I.C.K. appears in the May edition of Hospital News.
5-13-08 Electric Owl makes PopCity, an online news publication which features up and coming companies in the area.
5-10-08 We just got back from the Games for Health Conference in Baltimore. Electric owl displayed a K.I.C.K. in the demo room and also gave a talk about making waiting rooms fun. This was an amazing time for us. We met lot's of really great people and we can't thank Ben Sawyer at Digitalmill enough!
4-14-08 Electric Owl is proud to announce that we have installed a K.I.C.K. at Shriner's Hospital for Children in Tampa, Florida! The kiosk is there for a trial period in the lobby. Kids were playing with it as soon as we turned it on! Thanks so much to the team at Shriner's for working with us.
Next we will be turning our attention to planning our activities for the Games for Health (Baltimore) and the Child Life Council Conference (San Diego). Come say hi if you are going to be around those locations.
3-28-08: Electric Owl has donated some funds to Northgate High School Sports Program. Go Northgate!
A writeup of our work with UPMC in the Pitt News. March 2008
3-1-08: We have begun a major marketing push. Keep your eyes peeled for more news and info from Electric Owl Studios.
2-25-08: Electric Owl is proud to support the Chiefs of Police of Allegheney County. We hope our donation helps keep Pittsburgh neighborhoods safe.
2-15-08: More artist interns have signed on with Electric Owl! Welcome Cory Zielinski and James Hoback! They are both artists from Art Institute of Pittsburgh, and will be working with us to get more content for K.I.C.K. That brings the total count to nine here. It feels good to keep expanding like this. We are turning into quite the team.
1-29-08: We have just met with a new client who wants to create an athletic training program for kids. More to come later.
1-07-08: Our family has grown yet again. We now welcome our new animation interns Sarah Will, Chris Boette, and David Mikesell! We met Sarah at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh graduation show. Her art style and goals really lined up with our needs as a company. She will be working with us to expand the software offerings on the K.I.C.K.
Chris is an ETC graduate student and a writer. He will be acting as a producer and keeping our projects rolling along smoothly. Electric Owl is lucky to have him on the team.
Dave is a senior at Point Park University, and will be helping bring K.I.C.K. to market. We will be working with him to raise awareness, get PR, and hopefully sell some units. We are ready to get up and get out now that our product is a proven success at a major hospital.
12-27-07: The final kiosk has been installed at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh just in time for the New Year! We would, again, like to thank them for being such a great customer. This whole order has been a massive learning process for everybody involved, but they are THE FIRST HOSPITAL IN THE WORLD to have K.I.C.K.s installed in their waiting rooms!
12-10-07: We have been approached by another Idea Foundry company to develop an application. This one is "hush-hush," however. We will post more when the project is officially announced.
10-25-07: The first of the new kiosks was installed today at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh. It looks like we still have some bugs to work out in the installation process, but those kids jumped right on it as soon as we activated the system. It is very satisfying to see our work in action, to know that it's actually doing its intended job. We should be rolling another unit out once a week from now until the job order is complete.
10-1-07: Welcome to our newest partner, Brad Patton! He graduated with us from the ETC in May. We were somehow able to lure him away from his many job offers to come work with us at Electric Owl. He is a very talented computer programmer, and we are very lucky to have him. He will help take some of the stress off of Phil, who has been working his brains out.
8-27-07: We are officially Idea Foundry Fellows! They have made the full investment in us, and just in time. This should carry us well into 2008. We really can't thank them enough. They are great partners, and they are truly helping Pittsburgh succeed one idea at a time.
8-09-07: Electric Owl sponsors an event at the Firehouse Lounge to benefit kids with cystic fibrosis. We are really proud to serve our community and fulfill our mission as a company that makes the world a better place for children.
7-31-07: We just signed a lease for our new office space! We will be located in East Liberty right on the cusp of the new revitalization of the area. It is also very convenient for us because we all live close to the office. Thank you to We Do Property for offering us the great deal on the space. Also, thank you to the Entertainment Technology Center at CMU for letting us live there for the summer. We couldn't have done it without you!
7-1-07: Idea Foundry has graciously offered us an early investment before we receive the full fellowship. They have also gotten us an amazing legal team who in turn put us in touch with an amazing accountant. Pittsburgh really is a startup-friendly town. The business community here is very supportive of startups like Electric Owl because success of new businesses means success for the region. We are proud of our city, and proud to be a part of a new generation of businesses.
A live interview with Fred done by Ford Shankle, a Pittsburgh education activist. July 2007
6-28-07: All the paperwork with Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh is complete and we are ready to start work on their kiosks. We are in the middle of setting up a brand new manufacturing process, we have upgraded all of our hardware, and we are in full development of a brand new game.
5-20-2008: We are now CMU graduates and a fully legitimate entity recognized by the great Commonwealth of Pennsylvania! We did it! Our work with ArtThread is also complete (for now). Time for a little break.
4-28-2007: Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh has asked for a quote for six more units! We haven't even graduated Carnegie Mellon yet! This is very exciting, and a great start for Electric Owl. We are also in the process of securing an investment so we can really get moving this summer.
4-26-2007: We made a presentation to the Mayor of Osaka, Japan. April 2007
1-15-07: We would like to announce that our first job as a "company" will be to work with the newly formed ArtThread Foundation to develop a web-based art interface so that people in the hospital can share their creativity with others. Find out more at www.artthread.org. We will be spending our last semester at CMU working on this project, and also starting the process of forming our startup. Hopefully we have ourselves set up by the time we graduate!
